Our campgrounds and forest accommodation venues are now closed for the season. They will reopen on 1 April 2022 with online bookings available from 1 March 2022.

Welcome to Chalk’s Campground

ForestrySA manages a number of designated campgrounds and accommodation facilities in the Mount Lofty Ranges.

Chalk’s Campground is set among beautiful redgums and named after one of Mount Crawford’s first foresters.

Forest visitors wishing to use a campsite for day visits are required to book and pay for their site online prior to arrival.

Use of fire pits within picnic areas remains free of charge and available on a first-in, first-served basis.

Camping is permitted from 1 April to 30 November annually, outside of the fire danger season.

Wood fires are permitted from 1 May – 31 October annually. (These dates may change in seasons where high fire danger persists).

Fire is prohibited on ForestrySA land and Forest Reserves between November 1 and April 30 in any year. (These dates may be extended in areas where high fire danger persists).

About Chalk’s Campground

Chalk’s Campground is named after one of the original foresters at Mount Crawford. It is set within beautiful redgums and offers basic bush camping.

Camping and public use of this campground is managed to ensure the continued, sustainable health of the forest and enjoyment to users.

Bookings and fees

  • All bookings must be made online
  • Campsite fees are charged per vehicle (not per person). A fee of $18.30 per vehicle applies
  • A maximum of 3 vehicles are permitted per campsite. Please note that some sites are limited to 1 or 2 vehicles – please check individual site details when making your booking
  • A maximum number of 10 people are permitted per campsite
  • Day visitors using a campsite must book and pay online, as for overnight camping

Overnight bookings: Arrive after 12pm, depart before 11am
*A late departure requires the booking and purchase of an extra night

Chalk’s Campground is located in the Mount Crawford Forest, a short drive from the Mount Crawford Forest Information Centre on Warren Road.

Terms and conditions of use

  • Many organised competitions and events are held in the Mount Crawford and Kuitpo Forest Reserves. These require the submission of an event application, which are approved on a case by case basis. If your accommodation query relates to an event please contact the Mount Crawford or Kuitpo Information Centres for more information. Please note that booking of a facility does not necessarily mean your event will be approved.  Events need to be booked a minimum of four weeks in advance. (Event Application Form)
  • Camping is prohibited from 1 December – 31 March annually.
  • You are not permitted to drive in the forest. Vehicles must be parked in designated areas only.
  • The use of generators and chainsaws is not permitted.
  • Please consider other forest users and keep all noise must be kept to a minimum by 10pm.
  • Wood fires are prohibited 1 November – 30 April annually.
  • Gas fires are prohibited 1 December – 31 March annually.
  • Wood fires are only permitted in designated fire pits within camping and picnic areas.
  • Fire pits should be cleared of all flammable material for a distance of 4 metres. Someone must always be present
    and ensure the fire is fully extinguished upon departure.
  • You may collect dead and fallen timber from the adjoining plantation. It is an offence to cut any standing timber.
  • Dogs are permitted, provided they are kept on a leash at all times. Please be aware of fox baiting programs operating in the area.
  • No horse riding is permitted in the campgrounds.
  • The campground, picnic areas, shelters and toilets must be left in a clean and tidy state, with all rubbish removed.
  • Other conditions may be imposed by the ForestrySA Ranger.
