The camera is the first AI-powered fire detection camera operating in a peri-urban area in Australia and the first such system deployed by ForestrySA.
Located at the Mount Crawford Fire Tower, the technology uses artificial intelligence to continuously monitor the landscape for signs of smoke and potential fire activity. By helping detect fires earlier, the system has the potential to support faster response times and improve protection for communities, forests, and the environment.
ForestrySA Chief Executive Nathan Paine said the project demonstrates how innovation can strengthen South Australia’s bushfire preparedness capabilities.
“This technology represents an important step forward in how we monitor and respond to fire risks. Early detection can make a significant difference, particularly during periods of elevated fire danger.”
