Accessible Outdoors Program – recognising the value of inclusive outdoor spaces

ForestrySA has joined forces with the National Parks and Wildlife Service, Nature Play SA and SA Water to make the great outdoors more accessible to everyone.

Through a partnership with community organisation Bedford Group, the Accessible Outdoors Program has been launched with a program of outdoor activities in parks, reservoirs and forests to assist people living with a disability to spend time outdoors. This innovative program is dedicated to breaking down barriers and helping to foster a deeper connection to nature.

A range of facilitated activities for people living with a disability or mobility issues have been made available through this program, including guided walks, fossicking, cooking on a campfire and learning camping skills and wildflower identification.

One of the core elements of the program is to raise awareness about the barriers faced by some visitors to public open spaces, and we want to provide an opportunity for people to share their experiences and offer insights on the challenges and obstacles they face. This valuable feedback will inform how we can improve approaches to accessibility within outdoor areas, to ensure as many people as possible can enjoy these amazing natural spaces.

ForestrySA Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2026 โ€“ 2030

ForestrySA is committed to providing safe, accessible and inclusive services, facilities and workplaces for our community, visitors and employees.

As a state authority responsible for managing plantation and native forests, we recognise the importance of considering the needs of people living with disability in how we plan, deliver and improve our work. This includes supporting equitable access to forest environments, recreation opportunities, information, services and employment.

Our Disability Access and Inclusion Plan outlines the practical steps we will take to strengthen accessibility and inclusion across our services, programs and workplace practices. It aligns with the State Disability Inclusion Plan 2025โ€“2029 and reflects our responsibilities as a public sector organisation.

Accessibility and inclusion is ongoing work. This plan builds on previous initiatives and will continue to evolve through monitoring, stakeholder engagement and responding to emerging needs, ensuring a practical and sustainable approach within ForestrySAโ€™s operating environment.
