ForestrySA manages a number of designated campgrounds and accommodation facilities in the Mount Lofty Ranges.

Chookarloo is a very popular camp and and picnic site set in natural Eucalypt woodland, within Kuitpo Forest.

Forest visitors wishing to use a campsite for day visits are required to book and pay for their site online prior to arrival.

Use of fire pits within picnic areas remains free of charge and available on a first-in, first-served basis.

Camping is permitted from 1 April to 30 November annually. Fees apply.

Wood fires are permitted from 1 May – 31 October annually. (These dates may change in seasons where high fire danger persists).

The forest is closed to the public on declared Total Fire Ban days. To report a fire, call 000.

The Kuitpo and Mount Crawford Forests are located within the Mount Lofty Ranges Fire Ban District. For fire ban information phone 1800 362 361 or visit the CFS website. Being aware of a Total Fire Ban is your responsibility.

Fire is prohibited on ForestrySA land between November 1 and April 30 in any year. (These dates may be extended in areas where high fire danger persists).

Before you visit - about Chookarloo

Chookarloo Campsite has high conservation and biodiversity value. Camping and public use of the site is managed to ensure the continued, sustainable health of the forest and enjoyment to users. Please enjoy the site within the guidelines to promote a healthy future for our forest.

23 designated camping sites (Sites 1 and 2 are for hikers only. Please contact us during office hours to make a booking.)

Bookings and fees

All bookings must be made online. Click here to book.
Campsite fees are charged per vehicle (not per person). A fee of $19.60 per vehicle applies
A maximum of 3 vehicles are permitted per campsite. Please note that some sites are limited to 1 or 2 vehicles – please check individual site details when making your booking
A maximum number of 10 people are permitted per campsite
Day visitors using a campsite must book and pay online, as for overnight camping

Arrival and departure

Overnight bookings: Arrive after 12pm, depart before 11am.
*A late departure requires the booking and purchase of an extra night.

How to get there

Chooklarloo is located in the Kuitpo Forest, a short drive North from the Kuitpo Forest Information Centre located at 495 Brookman Road.

Terms and conditions

Many organised competitions and events are held in the Mount Crawford and Kuitpo Forest Reserves. These require the submission of an event application, which are approved on a case by case basis. If your accommodation query relates to an event please contact the Mount Crawford or Kuitpo Information Centres for more information. Please note that booking of a facility does not necessarily mean your event will be approved. Events need to be booked a minimum of four weeks in advance. Submit an Event Application here.
Camping is prohibited from 1 December – 31 March annually.
You are not permitted to drive in the forest. Vehicles must be parked in designated areas only.
The use of generators and chainsaws is not permitted.
Please consider other forest users and keep all noise must be kept to a minimum by 10pm.
Wood fires are prohibited 1 November – 30 April annually.
Gas fires are prohibited 1 December – 31 March annually.
Wood fires are only permitted in designated fire pits within camping and picnic areas.
Fire pits should be cleared of all flammable material for a distance of 4 metres. Someone must always be present
and ensure the fire is fully extinguished upon departure.
You may collect dead and fallen timber from the adjoining plantation. It is an offence to cut any standing timber.
Dogs are permitted, provided they are kept on a leash at all times. Please be aware of fox baiting programs operating in the area.
Horse riding is prohibited in the campgrounds.
The campground, picnic areas, shelters and toilets must be left in a clean and tidy state, with all rubbish removed.
Other conditions may be imposed by the ForestrySA Ranger.
